THE YMCA AND THE GBYLA PARTNER UP FOR
YOUTH LACROSSE!

For the 6th consecutive year, the YMCA and GBYLA will partner up for youth lacrosse in Birmingham.  The YMCA is a vital part of the success of your GBYLA youth lacrosse program.  For the Spring 2009 lacrosse season the YMCA will host three youth teams:

Little Lizards -

Will serve all boy lacrosse players in the 1st and 2nd grade except those playing on the GBYLA Jr. Hawks from Hoover.  So if your son lives in any area other than Hoover, you need to register your child to play on the Little Lizards team thru the Shades Valley Y, and if your son lives in Hoover, you need to register him online to play thru the GBYLA on the Jr. Hawks.

Lizards -

Will serve all boy lacrosse players in the 3rd and 4th grade who live in Vestavia, Homewood and areas other than Hoover, Mountain Brook, or Oak Mountain.  So if your son lives in Vestavia, Hoover, Mountain Brook or Oak Mountain, you need to register your son online thru the GBYLA and not thru the Shades Valley Y, and if your son lives in any other area, you need to register him thru the Shades Valley Y to play on the Lizards team..

Lady Lizards -

Will serve all girl lacrosse players in the 1st thru 5th grade not playing on the Vestavia GBYLA girls team. So if your daughter lives anywhere other than Vestavia, register thru the Shades Valley Y, and if your daughter lives in Vestavia, register her online thru the GBYLA.

Registration for the Lizards opened on December 17th at the Shade Valley YMCA on Hwy 31.  You can register at the Shades Valley YMCA or you can go online at www.ymcabham.org.   The YMCA phone number is # 870-9622.  The fee for the Lizards is $120.00 for YMCA members and $140.00 for non-members.  If you do not fall into a Lizard team you will register online thru the GBYLA.

For more information on the LIZARDS go to www.shadesvalleylizards.com.

December 26 - The GBYLA has just been notified it has been awarded a $10,000 competitive grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to support its Player Sponsorship Program and 2009 Inner City Lacrosse Initiative -  Thank you!!

December 1, 2008 - GBYLA IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE:

**The GBYLA Player Sponsorship Program**

The GBYLA Player Sponsorship Program is designed to help players who need financial assistance to play lacrosse.  Last season the GBYLA was able to offer 25 full-or-partial scholarships (in the form of registration discounts / waivers and/or financial assistance for equipment purchases) to players who needed financial help to play.  Five of these players were right in our midst in our Over-the-Mountain communities, and others were from the City of Birmingham team at Hayes High School that GBYLA sponsored.

For the upcoming 2009 Spring Season we are on track with our 2009 Inner City Lacrosse Initiative to start 5 new boys and girls teams - 2 at the 7th-8th grade level  (at Whatley Middle School next to the former Hayes High School) and 3 more at the JV level (at Ramsey High School and Jackson Olin High School).    Given the expense of playing lacrosse, our goal is to provide an opportunity for every player who wants to play the sport of lacrosse -- regardless of his or her financial circumstances.  It costs $8,000 to equip a boys team and $4,000 to equip a girls team, so with an anticipated 5 City of Bham teams, GBYLA is seeking to raise $32,000 to start these 5 City of Birmingham teams. With the recent $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, we have a great start toward our $32,000 goal. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO REACH OUR GOAL!!!

So, when you register  you will be asked if you would like to participate in the GBYLA Player Sponsorship Program at one of the following levels of participation:  Diamond - $100   Gold - $50.00   Silver - $25.00    Bronze - $10.00

Whatever you are able to do will be greatly appreciated and know that we will provide everyone a report of the results of our efforts once the season is underway.  If you are able and willing to participate in a more significant way financially, please call Executive Director Hunter Faulconer at  # 914-4895 to discuss further.

If you have questions regarding the 2009 Spring Lacrosse Season (or other GBYLA programs) e-mail or call our Executive Director Hunter Faulconer at hunter@gbyla.org or 914-4895.

GBYLA is in the process of changing its website to reflect the new GBYLA.  You can now access the BYLL website by going to www.gbyla.org.

July 13 - The  BYLL has hired its first full time Executive Director, Hunter Faulconer. Already known by many in the BYLL family, Hunter has been a volunteer coach for the past 5 years in our youth division. Hunter hails from Charlottesville, Virginia where he was a high school lacrosse All-American and attended the University of Virginia, where he played college lacrosse for 2 years.  In more recent years he has played on several men's lacrosse teams, coached in the BYLL, and for the past two years been a US Lacrosse certified referee.  Hunter owns Tannehill Sporting Clays and is married to Frances Parker Faulconer.  They have 3 children - Hunter, age 15; Libbie, age 12, and Frances, age 5. Please welcome Hunter on board. His e-mail address is hunter@gbyla.org

Also, the BYLL has officially changed its name to the Greater Birmingham Youth Lacrosse Association (GBYLA) to better reflect the nature of our organization. It is an exciting time to be a part of the new GBYLA, and we welcome your involvement as we work to expand opportunities for boys and girls to play lacrosse throughout the Greater Birmingham area.

New 2008 - 2009 Officers and Directors for GBYLA have also been elected. For more information, see tab at left under About Us.
